BACKGROUND PROCESS INFORMATION:
The Fairbanks Police Department background process is comprehensive. Those applicants selected to go into the background process are expected to be active participants. The background process includes:
- Applicant interview
- Lie Detector Test
- Psych Exam
- Fit-for-Duty Physical Examination
A modified hiring process is used for Out of State Lateral Officer applicants. Applicants can expect to travel to and remain in Fairbanks for 3 days to complete certain portions of the background process.
Out of State Lateral Police Officers must have attended an academy that is recognized by the Alaska Police Standards Council or currently hold a law enforcement certificate that is recognized by the Alaska Police Standards Council. Candidates will be required to take the Physical Ability Test (PAT) within 60 days of taking the written test and must be completed prior to moving on to oral boards. The PAT should be scheduled through the Public Safety Testing Website. The minimum acceptable standard for each event is as follows:
- 300 Meter Run = 77 seconds
- Push-Ups = 21 repetitions
- One Minute Sit-Ups = 15 repetitions
- 1.5 mile run = 17 minutes, 17 second

Candidates will be screened during the selection process at which time a determination will be made as to whether an applicant is in violation of the guidelines below. If a candidate is found to be in violation, then the person will have the option of having the tattoo or the visible portion thereof, removed at their own expense. If a candidate expresses a willingness to have this done, then their application will be placed on hold until the process is complete. Taking this action does not guarantee an applicant a position; he/she must successfully complete each phase of the process. All employees, while on duty, are prohibited from: Having any visible tattoos or body art on the head, face, neck or scalp. Any tattoos or body art on any of these areas will be covered by clothing. Tattoos or body art that are gang related; that convey sexual, racial, religious, ethnic, or related intolerances; that promote a partisan political statement or expression; or that portray derogatory or offensive characterizations contrary to the values of this department. Visible body piercing jewelry, including all facial and tongue piercings, with the exception of ear piercings for female employees. Body Art -- shall include, but is not limited to, the following: 1.Tongue splitting or bifurcation 2.Complete or trans-dermal implantation of any objects other than hair replacement. 3.Abnormal shaping of ears, eyes, or nose. 4.Unnatural contact lens colors and hair colorations; or color variations that detract from a professional appearance. 5.Gauging or gradually increasing the radius of a surgically induced opening in the flesh in areas such as the earlobes or lips. 6.Branding or scarification. 7.Abnormal filing of teeth. 8.Dental ornamentation; including the use of gold, platinum, or other veneer cap for the purpose of ornamentation or application of designs, jewels or initials. |

COVID-19 UPDATES
5/6/2020 Update:
TESTING IN WASHINGTON STATE CANCELED THROUGH MAY 31, 2020
All pre-employment tests in Washington State have been canceled until May 31, 2020 unless government restrictions are eased. With recent updates, facility closures, and government guidelines, this step is necessary and could be modified at any time. The health and safety of our customers, our staff, and their families is of the highest priority.
We will continue to evaluate developments and make changes to this policy as necessary. When we do resume testing, there will be plenty of events for everyone to test. We are in regular communication with our public safety agency partners, assessing alternatives to the traditional testing model and our testing policies. Any future updates will be posted on the PST website and our Facebook page.
4/1/2020 Update:
If you have tested with PST in the past 12 months, there may be additional positions you are now eligible to add. Several departments have temporarily changed their testing policies due to the suspension in testing that COVID-19 has caused. Please login to your PST account and navigate to the ‘New Positions’ page to see what departments you can add! We will regularly update that page in your account as departments send updates.
FUTURE TEST REGISTRATION
We know that there will be testing in the future - we just don’t know when! We want you to be prepared for when testing begins again so we have created test events on our calendar that you can register for that will place you in a queue to be first notified. These tests are not “real” test events, they are essentially a holding area. You will be able to “reschedule” out of that event to any other event date/location at no cost. Registering now will also give you time to work on your Personal History Statement (PHS) so that your data will be ready and up-to-date to send to your departments once testing resumes.
